The Need for a Dynamical Climate Reanalysis
نویسنده
چکیده
T he Earth’s climate is dominated by diverse and changeable natural processes over a wide range of time and space scales (e.g., Folland et al. 2001). This includes changes related to transient synoptic weather systems and to phenomena on much longer time scales, such as the quasibiennial oscillation (QBO) and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with time scales up to several years. Especially intriguing are the climate variations related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The difference between a mild and cold winter in northwest Europe, for example, is mainly caused by noticeable storm-track variations that are not yet fully understood. Some of the climate variations are driven by internal phenomena in the atmosphere, others are related to interactions between the atmosphere and the oceans and between the atmosphere and the land surfaces, and still others are due to solar and volcanic influences. At the same time, Earth’s climate is increasingly exposed to anthropogenic changes, such as increasing greenhouse gases. Because of the high variability over a broad range of time scales, the climate of the Earth cannot be properly described by time averages only, but instead requires continuous monitoring on a daily resolution or higher because many atmospheric features undergo rapid changes. Such high-resolution THE NEED FOR A DYNAMICAL CLIMATE REANALYSIS

Evolving Climate Networks
We propose a method to reconstruct and analyse an evolving complex network from data generated by a spatio-temporal dynamical system. We study reanalysis surface air temperature data by different complex network measures. This approach reveals a rich internal structure in complex climate networks and allows to study the stability of the climate network and the impacts of teleconnections (e.g., ...
متن کاملA comparative study of quantitative mapping methods for bias correction of ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data
This study evaluates the ability of different quantitative mapping (QM) methods as a bias correction technique for ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data. Climate type and geographical location can affect the performance of the bias correction method due to differences in precipitation characteristics. For this purpose, ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data for the years 1989-2019 for 10 selected syno...
متن کاملMidlatitude Tropopause and Low-level Moisture
A new relationship between the surface distribution of equivalent potential temperature and the potential temperature at the tropopause is proposed. Using a Gaussian approximation for the distribution of equivalent potential temperature, we argue that the tropopause potential temperature is approximately given by the mean equivalent potential temperature at the surface plus twice its standard d...
متن کاملA combined statistical and dynamical approach for downscaling largescale footprints of European windstorms
[1] The occurrence of mid-latitude windstorms is related to strong socio-economic effects. For detailed and reliable regional impact studies, large datasets of high-resolution wind fields are required. In this study, a statistical downscaling approach in combination with dynamical downscaling is introduced to derive storm related gust speeds on a highresolution grid over Europe. Multiple linear...
متن کاملA Combined Dynamical and Statistical Downscaling Technique to Reduce Biases in Climate Projections: An Example for Winter Precipitation and Snowpack in the Western United States
11 Large biases associated with climate projections are problematic when it comes to 12 their regional application in the assessment of water resources and ecosystems. Here, we 13 demonstrate a method that can reduce systematic biases in regional climate projections. 14 The global and regional climate models employed to demonstrate this technique are the 15 Community Climate System Model (CCSM)...
